FM Approvals Standard 4994, Non-Flame-Propagating Containers Used in Top-Loading Automatic Storage and Retrieval Systems (TL-ASRS), states the testing and certification requirements for these storage arrangements which are maintained in a tightly packed vertically aligned solid-piled arrangement.
Due to the configuration of TL-ASRS arrangements, aisles are not required thus making them inaccessible to fire service personnel who would be relied upon for extinguishment in case of a fire. As a result, this standard evaluates the storage container’s ability to prevent flame propagation to other surrounding containers of similar construction without the use of automatic or manual fire-fighting intervention.
According to Daniel Boardman, FM Approvals’ Technical Team Manager, Building Materials, “FM 4994 is another example of how third-party certification of evolving technologies helps TL-ASRS manufacturers and users have independent confirmation that the systems can perform in a way that mitigates fire hazards given the unique challenges associated with accessing these spaces.”
